European market demand for quick-frozen garlic and ginger from China remains strong

Quick-frozen vegetable mixes are a common frozen product, and they often contain peppers, tomatoes, beans, and cucumber. The fresh ingredients are processed and then quickly brought to the lowest possible temperature before they are added to the quick-frozen vegetable mix.

Relevant research shows that quick-frozen vegetables are even more nutritious than fresh vegetables. The nutritional value of fruit and vegetables begins to decline the moment these products are harvested. By the time most ‘fresh’ agricultural products reach the market, their nutritional value has already significantly declined. Quick-frozen vegetables are frozen at their peak when their nutritional value is at its highest. This method seals in the largest possible amount of nutrients and anti-oxidants, while leaving the vegetables fresh and the flavor unaffected.

The outbreak of Covid-19 in the beginning of 2020 has brought the fresh produce industry a number of significant challenges. Furthermore, the overall market conditions are not great. The import of quick-frozen vegetables faces some of the same challenges. The price has dropped much in comparison with last year. “There are many reasons for this situation. First, international shipping costs soared, which pushed the transport cost up. Second, clients can only afford a limited price increase. That is why overseas demand declined. However, the market is now slowly improving.” This is according to Ross Xu of Rizhao Green Extension Food Co., Ltd.

According to Mr. Xu, “at the moment we primarily export quick-frozen garlic and quick-frozen ginger to supermarkets and processing factories in Europe. Overseas market demand differs between countries based on how well they are handling the pandemic, especially when it comes to opening or closing restaurants. That has a definite effect on the decline of market demand.”

In the end, when overseas demand began to decline, the spread of Covid-19 in China was largely brought under control. The domestic market is gradually recovering. Take Rizhao Green Extension Food Co., Ltd. as an example, about 10% of the sales volume is sold in the domestic market. That number was somewhat higher in the last year or so.
