In response to Japan’s plan of discharging radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, Hong Kong stated on the 20th that it will ban the entry of fruits, vegetables, and milk from Fukushima Prefecture.
Japan held a cabinet meeting on April 13th and decided to discharge the radioactive wastewater stored in the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the sea, which aroused the concerns of neighboring countries and the international community.
Ge Peifan, a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, pointed out that Japanese vegetables, seafood, and dairy products should be banned from being imported into Hong Kong due to nuclear contamination, or a warning should be issued. Ge also believes that Hong Kong should create a list of banned foods from Japan.
Xu Lejian, Food Safety Commissioner of the Department of Health responded that Hong Kong has now banned the import of vegetables, fruits, and dairy products from Fukushima Prefecture in Japan. For foods and seafood from other parts of Japan, Hong Kong only permits importation with the presence of certificates of inspection and radiation. Xu said that the Hong Kong authorities will continue to carry out inspections and observe the situation of radiation when importing foods from other prefectures in Japan, such as Tokyo and Osaka.
After the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, the Hong Kong authorities issued an order prohibiting the import of five food categories from Fukushima, Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, and Tochigi prefectures, including vegetables, fruits, dairy, dairy products, and milk powder. As of July 2018, the authorities made a new arrangement to allow the entry of foods from four prefectures except for Fukushima, but a radiation certificate and an exporter certificate must be attached.
