For the first time in history, SanLucar is shipping its products to Germany by train with Transfesa Logistics’ express refrigerated rail service.

In this initial phase, Transfesa Logistics is handling the shipment of one container of fresh produce per week from Valencia to Cologne within 48 hours. Following this first stage, the goal is to increase the volume progressively, depending on the results achieved. The use of this route entails a significant reduction of CO₂ emissions compared to road transport.

This marks the start of a relevant modal shift in the logistics of the agro-food sector, since the group is one of the world’s largest wholesale distributors. It has more than 3,200 employees from 30 countries and markets around 610,000 kilos of 90 varieties of fruit and vegetables from 35 producing countries of five continents every day.

Aware of the need to protect the environment, SanLucar is taking another step in its strong commitment to sustainability. With Transfesa Logistics’ express transport, the company wants to contribute as much as possible to reducing its carbon footprint and developing a green, emissions-free logistics chain.

SanLucar Transport Manager Jasmin Hiesberger says: “Our mission at SanLucar is to deliver fruit and vegetables in the most optimal way and to guarantee freshness and taste at all times. One of our main commitments is to ensure that the quality of the products is as high as possible on arrival at their destination, adhering to our philosophy of taste in harmony with people and nature.”

Regarding the new connection with Germany, she says that “the services offered by Transfesa Logistics provide a sustainable solution through rail transport, which is why we have decided to carry out the first tests using this means of transport.”

For his part, Transfesa Logistics’ key account manager, Pedro Ramos, expressed his satisfaction with the launch of this new service. “We are delighted that large companies such as SanLucar continue to get on board this train every day. This is very good news for the rail transport of fresh goods to key countries such as Germany, one of the group’s largest markets.”

According to Ramos, the express rail route for refrigerated products, such as the one to Cologne, is a very competitive and sustainable service. The high quality standards guarantee fast delivery, within 48 hours, so that the products reach their destination with maximum freshness, with the added benefit of contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.
