In an effort to encourage women especially in underserved communities to get screened for breast cancer, St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets is giving $50 Schnucks gift cards to the first 1,500 mammogram recipients in select St. Louis-area ZIP codes as part of a new campaign.

The Treasure Your Chest campaign, launching in partnership with the Pink Ribbon Girls of St. Louis and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, invites women living in any of 21 ZIP codes* in north St. Louis and St. Louis County to register online in order to receive a Schnucks gift-card voucher. After scheduling and completing their mammogram, recipients can bring their voucher to one of two Schnucks stores during a Treasure Your Chest event or take it to an Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis location to receive their gift card. Recipients also will be provided additional resources meant to promote healthy living and eating choices, Schnucks said.

“Working together, we can change the landscape and, over time, provide a meaningful impact on those devastating statistics that show breast cancer disproportionately affects women in underserved areas of St. Louisthat includes where Schnucks was founded 82 years ago and continues serving today,” Schron Jackson, Schnucks’ director of community engagement and customer care, said in a news release.

The CDC notes that breast cancer is the second most common cancer among U.S. women (behind some skin cancers) and that Black women in the U.S. have a higher rate of death from breast cancer than white, Native American, Asian and Hispanic women do, although white women have more new cancer diagnoses. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We are thrilled to partner with Schnucks and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis to help encourage women to make their health a priority,” said Cory Smallwood, regional director of Pink Ribbon Girls, in Schnucks’ news release. Pink Ribbon Girls provides transportation, meals, housecleaning and peer support to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or a gynecological cancer. “We hope that the Treasure Your Chest campaign will inspire women to schedule a mammogram because we know mammograms can save lives.”
