Dutch coop, ZON, grows by 10%, has positive 2020 results

In 2020, the Dutch cooperative, Royal ZON, grew by ten percent. It also achieved positive financial results, making €6.5 million in net profit. This was achieved through operational results, as well as real estate sales. As a result, ZON’s total 2020 turnover came to €291 million (€264 million in 2019).

The global pandemic resulted in all kinds of restrictions. Despite these, ZON managed to maintain operational continuity for the financial year. Notwithstanding two lockdowns, turnover,  in terms of volume, increased in 2020. Average payout prices were higher too. Significant sales increases at ZON’s retail customers could partly explain this. This should evolve further since buyers and growers both want to do direct business.

“ZON is, therefore, continually investing in developing the organization. We want to serve farmers and clients with our accumulated expertise. Thanks to that, more and more customers are being relieved of their concerns. That’s through customized products and services,” says a ZON spokesperson.

Investing in the auction
Besides account management, ZON’s auction is a vital marketplace. In certain market segments, it’s an increasing number of buyers. ZON has further strengthened its cooperation with Spanish growers’ organizations in the winter season. That’s to help auction clients year-round. The cooperative has an active acquisition policy.

That’s, once again, increased the number of buyers at the auction. Currently, money is being spent on ICT. That’s so ZON can offer buyers and growers several new functionalities from the beginning of 2022. That’ll enable the auction to respond even better to market needs.

The cooperative also developed the growers and consumer platform, Vaneigenbodem.nl. It supports the cooperative’s sales strategy. In the coming years, in partnership with the farmers, it’ll be further expanded. It should become the online platform for ZON and its members.

ZON’s Board of Directors, Management Board, and Supervisory Board think customization will be necessary. That’s so this diverse cooperative can continue to help both large and small growers. There are a couple of things that’ll remain central to this. ZON wants to increasingly focus on key accounts. And they want to strengthen the market supply, volume, and range-wise.

“We use our energy and ambition to get the best returns for our clients and members. So, the future looks healthy. The three Boards are confident about Royal ZON’s year ahead,” concludes the representative.
