“Fewer peaches than nectarines”

Much has been written and said about European summer fruit. Because of the frost, there’s less production in Europe this year. Demand is good, especially from the retail sector. “That’s why the prices remain fairly stable,” says Paul van Groningen of Green Food Iberica. He’s responsible for purchasing the Spanish range for the company’s Scandinavian parent organization. He also buys fruit and vegetables throughout Spain for other customers in North-West Europe.

Paul visited stone fruit growers before the season began. “It was then thought that nectarines would be particularly scarce this year. For peaches, the expectation was that there would be sufficient supply. Now, however, I notice more peach than nectarine shortages. It’s difficult to find the correct quality apricots too. Cherries, on the other hand, are doing better than last year. The weather, with occasional bad days, suit cherries.”

“It’s a generally challenging season. But we work with farmers from different Spanish regions. We’re, therefore, still getting the volumes we need,” concludes Paul.
