Rijk Zwaan is presenting the national and international agri-food sector with the trends that are changing consumer habits at the Global Melon & Watermelon e-vent 2021 conference, held from 28th June to 9th July 2021 at the Demo Centre CED La Palma, located in Cartagena, Spain, both live and digital.
Attendees from different continents are discovering the Rijk Zwaan portfolio, which includes a wide range of melon and watermelon varieties for both domestic and export markets.
During the demo days Rijk Zwaan is introducing all types of products, all with their all-year-round unique and standout identity. Bernardo Cuenca, Melon and Watermelon Coordinator at Rijk Zwaan comments: “We at Rijk Zwaan offer global solutions to the whole sector, and these solutions are in line with the challenges of sustainability, health and promotion of melon and watermelon consumption.”
As for melon, Rijk Zwaan has showed different innovations offering solutions to the entire value chain in terms of flavour, conservation, firmness and sustainability aspects of the varieties all year round.
Galia: Ready To Eat
The Ready To Eat concept, which can also be found within the Rijk Zwaan’s LSL Charantais line, applies now to the Galia line also. The cutting indicators, for instance, colour changing from green to cream, easily pinpoint the optimum time for harvesting.
Juan Francisco Martínez, Melon Specialist at Rijk Zwaan, explains: “When colour completely changes from green to creamy yellow, the melon has already reached a minimum of 12 degrees Brix, optimal for harvesting, marketing and consumption”.
Mellissimo®
Mellissimo represents Rijk Zwaan’s most renowned concept within the piel de sapo range. Our export line is unique thanks to its perfect size between 1.2 and 2.5 kg, unique flavour and long shelf life. Mellissimo varieties that guarantee the quality of the product all year round are Bravura RZ, Dolsura RZ, Ricura RZ, together with Minithor RZ, a new addition that also includes powdery mildew and aphid resistances.
Rijk Zwaan promotes an attractive and healthy range of watermelon concepts, with a diversity of formats and flesh colours
Within the watermelon with microseeds breeding program, Rijk Zwaan has introduced the new mini watermelon concept, between 1,5 and 2 kg and standing out in high yield with a small size. Besides, its good shelf life and excellent internal quality are points to be highlighted.
The Sandissima® range offers several reference varieties already being marketed, such as Gatinho RZ, Coralzinho RZ and Tigrinho RZ, tiger, and Conguita RZ, black. These are watermelons with microseeds ranging from 2.5 to 4.5 kg, ideal as pollinators and for the export market.
Rijk Zwaan’s novelties within this concept focus on tiger type skins with resistance to powdery mildew and meats with greater firmness and flavour. These characteristics can also be found in crimson type skins.
Regarding seedless watermelons, new varieties forming the new Tropical range catalogue have been exhibited, appealing consumers with their colourful diversity. Their black skin, intense yellow flesh and a 4 to 6 kg size are part of their identity. A new variety with tiger skin and high brix degrees and firmness has been incorporated to this range.
As part of the digital event, Rijk Zwaan has prepared a complete program of webinars (from 6th to 8th July) to bring up-to-date the current situation of the global melon and watermelon market, paying attention to its key players, technology and trends leading the change of the medium and long future of food.
