The early pepper campaign begins to take shape in Almeria

The 2021-2022 horticultural campaign is already beginning to take shape in some locations in the province of Almeria. This is the case in the highest areas of west Almeria and in La Alpujarra, where the early pepper has already been transplanted, and in Dalias, where producers planted the first batch since the end of May and June, and now will finish cultivating the bulk of the crop.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture in its state of crops report, corresponding to the period between July 5 and 11, 2021, the greenhouses of Níjar are still carrying out soil solarization work. This is enough in organic greenhouses, but conventional greenhouses may use disinfectants in their plantations.

Many tomatoes, especially the grooved ones, are ripening irregularly due to increased radiation, although tomatoes of the Daniela, Smooth, Branch, Pear, and Cherry varieties, among others, are still being harvested.

Pepper greenhouses are bleached but still, many plants are suffering from the heat and dehydrating.

Last week producers planted long black aubergines in greenhouses.

Some of the courgettes grown in courgette greenhouses are deformed due to the effect of high temperatures. Productions of about 12 kg/m² have been achieved altogether, from January to June.

In west Almeria, except for the early zones mentioned above, there are hardly any greenhouses with peppers in their harvest. Most are preparing the ground for the next season.

There are still some greenhouses with pear tomatoes finishing the harvest. The rest are disinfecting the soil.

Few plantations of aubergines remain in production, with the covers whitened and the bands open to avoid the heat.

Most cucumber greenhouses are being cleaned and disinfected, but there are already greenhouses with new plantings.

Most courgette greenhouses are preparing the soil for the next crop. However, green beans, both flat and round, are still being harvested.

In the seedbeds, plantings of all crops are increasing, including peppers, especially of the California variety, for early plantings.
