Taiwan education initiatives to assure innovation advantage

TORONTO, Canada – Education is an important component of the Republic of China (Taiwan) policymaking and is investing aggressively in higher education, towards its innovation ecosystem, its cultural internationalization and Taiwan-based firms in the global marketplace.

The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has announced the 2021 MOFA Taiwan Scholarship Program for undergraduate or graduate programs at universities in Taiwan; accessible throughout Taiwan’s diplomatic Corps (15 states), other regional and international institutions.

Recently, the embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize announced that 34 Belizean students have been awarded scholarships by the TaiwanICDF (Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund) Scholarship Program. Currently, over 100 Belizean students are pursuing their degree programs in Taiwan in various fields, such as public health, agriculture, business administration, engineering and information and communication technology. Moreover, almost 500 Belizeans have been offered scholarships to study in Taiwan. Most of these graduates currently hold positions in government and public institutions such as hospitals and schools, as well as in the private sector.

As part of the US – Taiwan Education Initiative, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on language education cooperation. The MOU is expected to help enhance and/or expand existing Mandarin and English language instruction opportunities in the United States and Taiwan. The MOU also encourages the exploration of opportunities for Mandarin and English language teachers and resources to be deployed to language programs at US universities and Taiwan educational institutions and facilitates greater exchange between US and Taiwan institutions based on best practices.

Taiwan is shaping its higher education (domestic and international students) concentrating on a talent pool with economic policy decisions to complement global trends. Accompanying this value-added proposition is Taiwan’s development thrust, demonstrated by Taiwan’s growth and projections targeted investments and incentivize entrepreneurship.

Positioned as the next alternative in the global marketplace, Taiwan’s knowledge transfer and strategies for market development is a premium on forward-thinking educational initiatives/exchanges.

With educational and innovation strategies to adapt to the challenges of this new era, Taiwan is well on its way to serve as a hub to foster transpacific cooperation, Taiwan-US educational initiatives, talent and skill base for a new generation of knowledge-based personnel, industries, products, and services.
