Using the Amazon “Just Walk Out” technology, Grubhub Campus has introduced cashierless checkout at convenience stores at Loyola University Maryland. Students, faculty and staff scan a QR code to enter the store, pick their items and leave, with the payment deducted from their student meal plan or other stored payment methods.
The technology uses AI-powered computer vision and deep-learning techniques, including generative AI, to determine who took what in a retail environment. Amazon built synthetic data sets to mimic millions of realistic shopping scenarios — including variations in store format, lighting conditions and even crowds of shoppers — to help ensure accuracy in virtually any setting.
The cashierless tech has been making inroads at a number of different retailing venues:
Grubhub partners with 300 higher education institutions and works with campus dining programs, allowing students to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account to access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. U.S. Amazon Prime members, including students using the discounted Prime Student offering, can get a one-year Grubhub+ membership, which includes $0 deliveries, for free.
