In a sustainable step, Genpak, a food service food packaging manufacturer, has announced the launch of its new moulded fibre packaging line.

The company says that the line has been designed “without intentionally added PFAS” (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, one common characteristic of concern of PFAS is that “many break down very slowly and can build up in people, animals, and the environment over time”.

With this in mind, Genpak has shared that it has revamped and extending an existing line to include containers, trays and tableware that does not contain the substances.

Often branded the “forever chemical”, PFAS has been used in consumer products around the world since the 1950s. In the food world, it has previously been used to prevent food from sticking to packaging or cookware.

Where are we with ‘forever chemicals’?

Now, Genpak is hoping to offer restaurants a “practical, economical solution”, especially if they are looking to implement eco-driven packaging policies.

Suggesting how this innovation could support the food sector, the company has said that its new line has been “designed to meet the needs of food restaurant operators” and claims it “merges environmental sustainability with reliable packaging performance and durability”.
