Dawn Foods launches yogurt cake mix for classic bakes

Dawn Foods UK and Ireland has launched an easy-to-use mix for yogurt cake, the classic French teatime treat, featuring a moist texture and the subtle tang of natural yogurt flavour.

Dawn Yogurt Cake Mix can be used to make a variety of bakes from loaf cakes to yogurt flavoured muffins, Bundt cake and traybakes, all with a soft, fluffy texture and subtle sweetness.

The new cake mix has been developed as a contemporary twist on classic Crème Cake Mix, one of Dawn’s most popular products. Lightly golden in colour, the finished Yogurt Cake has great volume – which can be achieved by mixing all the ingredients at medium speed – and it holds inclusions well, opening a range of different cake ideas. The mix is easy-to-use and economical too, requiring just the addition of oil, water and eggs. Bakers can intensify the yogurt flavour if they wish by replacing 225g water in the recipe with 225g plain yogurt.

Dawn has developed some new recipes using the Yogurt Cake Mix along with a selection of fruit fillings, icings, fonds and compounds from its wider ingredients portfolio. Recipes include a Greek Lemon Loaf cake – a modern take on a lemon drizzle loaf cake, a Bundt cake where the tang of yogurt is complemented by fresh raspberries throughout, as well as cupcakes filled with a citrus flavour compound and topped with premium frosting; all are ideal as a dessert or to enjoy with afternoon tea.

The Yogurt Cake Mix launch is part of Dawn Foods’ Total Cake Solutions Campaign running throughout 2024 where the company will be highlighting a range of cake types and ways in which bakers can premium-ise the classics to appeal to today’s consumers. Despite the challenges of the ‘credit crunch’, Dawn points to data from Mintel which shows that cake launches have remained significant in the UK and Europe in the past few years, with 44% reporting that they eat cakes, cake bars or sweet baked goods at least once a week (Source: Mintel, Cake Survey, UK, 2023).

Dawn’s own Global Bakery Trends Report highlights that today’s consumers no longer feel guilty about eating cake either, instead viewing it as a ‘Daily Delight’ that is good for mental wellbeing. Consumers are also looking for fresh takes on classic sweet bakes with the addition of new flavours and formats.

“Today enjoying a sweet treat has gone from something to feel guilty about to something that makes consumers feel good. Not only does the Yogurt Cake, made with Dawn’s new easy-to-use mix, taste great but it can be used as the base for many different types of sweet bakes, saving the baker time and resources, as well as enhancing sales opportunities ” explains Jacqui Passmore, marketing lead west EU & AMEAP at Dawn Foods.
