Three Oaks Cabin recently edged out tight competition to secure the BASF Growing Home $25,000 Ontario grant with approximately 10,000 votes.
Iowa State University researchers are developing large, vision-based artificial intelligence tools to identify and then recommend controls for agricultural pests….
“It will be earmarked directly for our guests,” said Three Oaks Cabin co-founder Diane Bergsma. “We’re thinking (of) using it towards upgrading the trails to be used year-round.”
Why it matters: Three Oaks Cabin provides no-cost respite for farmers and first responders who face mental health challenges and emotional fatigue.
In addition to the grant, Three Oaks recently received $13,862 in combined donations from the now disbanded Lambton Mutual Aid Association, which represents all Lambton County Fire Departments, and the Warwick Firemens’ Association.
Warwick Township Fire Chief Brad Goodhill said access to respite is vital because most fire department calls involve traumatic events.
“For a first responder or dispatcher, we are dealing with the worst day of someone’s life every day of the week. Eventually, that can wear on a person and their families. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of this daily grind helps everyone deal with the stresses sooner before it is too late.”
Bergsma said fundraising is constant to maintain free therapy from qualified agriculture and first responder-experienced registered therapists. Windfalls from the BASF grant and community donations ensure the program can continue.
“It’s been a humbling journey all along. It’s been our vision, but it’s been the community that made it come to life,” said Bergsma, adding that facility bookings are filling since registration opened in the spring.
There have also been inquiries about building similar facilities in the province, and Bergsma said she hopes that will happen as more people become aware and comfortable speaking about mental health.
Three Oaks Cabin is having a 5K Hard Miles Run in Mitchell’s Bay June 15 and a Shifting Gears tractor parade on Aug. 17 to raise additional funds. Details can be found at threeoakscabin.com.
