Article content

Originally published in the 2002 edition of the cookbook More Six O’Clock Solutions from The Vancouver Sun Test Kitchen, this burger is anything-but “basic.” With simple ingredients, this patty recipe is for the burger purists who prefer to let their toppings add the pizzazz.

The Sun’s Basic Burger

1/4 cup (50 mL) dry bread crumbs

1/4 cup (50 mL) finely chopped onion

Article content

2 tbsp (30 mL) water

1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard

2 garlic cloves, minced

1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt

1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper

1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef

4 hamburger buns, halved and toasted

In a bowl, combine bread crumbs, onion, water, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix in ground beef and shape into four patties, about 3/4-inch thick.

Place patties on greased barbecue grill over medium heat and cook for 10-12 minutes or until no longer pink inside, turning once. Or cook to desired doneness. Place cooked patties on toasted buns and top with desired toppings.

Serves 4.
