Discount grocers Dollar General and Dollar Tree had the biggest presence in the first edition of Supermarket News’ monthly store map with 87 combined store openings and seven closings.
A total of 96 grocery stores opened and 18 closed in the U.S. between July 15 and Aug. 13.
This interactive look at the grocery landscape comes via a monthly partnership with ScrapeHero.com, an online data analytics firm that monitors the the websites of retailers across the country to keep track of their locations.
The inaugural edition of the SN store map features 10 grocery retailers with both store openings and closings. Readers can hover over each icon to see the store brand, address, and whether the store opened or closed.
This project is in no way intended to be a complete map of every grocery chain and only represents changes in store count based on what each grocer is reporting to the general public online.
For instance, we know that Aldi has been rapidly opening stores across the U.S., but those are not yet accounted for by our partners at ScrapeHero.com. Expect those to appear next month.
Here’s a breakdown of how many stores opened or closed in each chain this past month:
- Albertsons: 1 closed
- Costco: 3 opened
- Dollar General: 72 opened; 5 closed
- Dollar Tree: 15 opened; 2 closed
- Hy-Vee: 4 opened; 1 closed
- Publix: 1 opened; 2 closed
- Target: 3 opened
- Trader Joe’s: 1 opened
- Walgreens: 2 closed
- Walmart: 2 closed
