BC’s egg farmers know the value of tasty, nutritious food and recognize the huge increase in people needing to use food banks. As a result, they are making monthly donations to Food Banks BC that will add up to more than 40,000 dozen eggs by the end of the year.
“Visits to food banks has increased 57% since 2019 and 30% of all food bank users are children,” says BC Egg’s Executive Director, Katie Lowe. “October 11 is World Egg Day and it is a good reminder that eggs are the top-requested perishable items from the Food Bank”
Eggs are nutritious – delivering all 9 essential amino acids and 6 grams of protein per large egg – plus they are versatile and fit into almost every lifestyle. In addition, eggs are simple and quick to prepare making them perfect for busy families.
“With demand for food banks reaching record levels in BC, the support we receive from BC Egg and BC’s egg farmers is incredible,” says Dan Huang-Taylor, Executive Director, Food Banks BC. “The contribution we receive from BC Egg provides a massive boost to our 107-member food banks and their ability to provide clients with nutritious BC eggs. We are deeply grateful for this partnership and thank BC Egg for joining us in the fight to tackle hunger.”
There are egg farms in the Fraser Valley, Okanagan, on the Island and in the North. BC Egg is happy to have local eggs make their way to food banks across the province.
