Aldi is making a change to its fresh poultry range starting next week as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare.

From Wednesday 30 October, shoppers will notice new packaging across the store’s fresh poultry range, highlighting the introduction of higher welfare standards.

First announced earlier in the year, the UK supermarket has introduced new stocking density requirements for its fresh chicken to improve their quality of life.

The new standards mean fresh chickens from Aldi, already sourced from British farms, now have 20 percent more space than the industry standard of 38 kg per square metre.

The shift follows Aldi’s recent announcement that it achieved its commitment to sell 100% cage-free eggs more than a year ahead of schedule.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Animal welfare is of paramount importance to us, and we’ve been working hard with our suppliers to reduce stocking density to help improve welfare conditions for chickens.

“We’re already one of the UK’s largest providers of chicken, and we’re proud that from next week, we can offer our customers access to higher welfare chicken at our unbeatable Aldi value.”

Supermarket giants Tesco and Lidl have committed to implementing similar stocking density requirements and welfare standards for their chickens by 2025.
