Quebec is becoming home to foodtech innovation, with startups tackling industry challenges such as creating plant-based dairy alternatives or finding ways to upcycle food waste.
The following five foodtech companies are innovating to reshape the food industry by focusing on dairy alternatives, waste reduction, and improving food production systems.
Harvest Moon Foods
Montreal-based Harvest Moon Foods is developing dairy alternatives using precision fermentation. By cultivating casein proteins from microbes instead of animals, the company is working to replicate dairy characteristics like melting, stretching, and frothing in plant-based products. The aim is to reduce reliance on resource-intensive animal products while maintaining taste and functionality in cooking and baking.
Go Zero Recycle
Magog-based Go Zero Recycle is tackling food packaging waste by developing solutions to recycle complex multi-materials that are typically hard to process, like cardboard and aluminum. The company is creating circular economy strategies, helping businesses reduce waste and create recyclable material inputs for manufacturers, diverting waste from landfills.
Soralink
St-Bruno-based Soralink uses AI and smart sensors to provide predictive maintenance solutions for food production equipment. Their technology helps manufacturers reduce downtime and repair costs by predicting equipment failures before they occur. This smart factory approach aims to optimize operational efficiency in the increasingly automated food processing sector.
Genuine Taste
Montreal-based Genuine Taste is addressing the sensory gap in plant-based meats by producing lab-cultivated beef fat. The startup is working with plant-based meat companies to incorporate cultivated fat into meat alternatives, improving their texture, aroma, and flavour without relying on animal products.
Dispersa
Laval-based Dispersa converts food waste into bio-based cleaning products, replacing petrochemical-based ingredients in soaps and detergents. This solution reduces food waste in landfills, where it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, while providing sustainable alternatives for the cleaning industry.
These five foodtech companies represent Quebec’s food innovation ecosystem.
