Farm building code updates will drive insurance increases

An unintended consequence of planned upgrades to Canada’s National Farm Building Code (NFBC) may be higher farm insurance rates.

The annual conference, coordinated by Grey Ag Services in conjunction with agricultural commodity leaders from Grey and Bruce counties, will be held in person at the Elmwood Community Centre, or can be livestreamed.

The conference starts with Beef Day, followed by Dairy, Goat, Sheep, Horse, Ecological and Crops Day.

Regardless of what type of ticket is purchased (livestreaming or in-person attendance), all attendees will be given access to conference recordings for a 30-day period post-event. Producers can make use of this ‘encore access’ in order to catch up on pieces that they may have missed, or to recap information that they found especially useful.

In addition to the encore access of the live presentations, audience members will also have access to  ‘on demand’ presentations. These are pre-recorded and available for watching on the attendee’s own time, from home. Topics covered are broad, and access to all presentations are included with tickets purchased for any day of the week.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Beef Day: Dr. Jordan Thomas, Assistant Professor, University of Missouri, will deliver Replacement Heifers: Hiring the Right Employees
  • Dairy Day: Dr. Albert De Vries, Professor, University of Florida will present Longevity in Your Dairy Herd and Maggie Van Camp, CEO, Redcrest Farms & Director of Strategic Change, Loft 32 will present Communication, the Grease Gun of Succession
  • Goat Day: Dr. Andrea Mongini, Partner in M&M Veterinary Practice, Denair CA will share two presentations – Artificial Kid Rearing: Nutrition and Management for Optimal Results and Goat Milk and Everything in it: The Science and Nutrition Behind Milk Components
  • Sheep Day: Peter Delbridge, Farmer / Owner of Blindwell Farm, Exmoor, and  Current National Sheep Association Chair for the UK, will share two topics – Sheep Farming in the UK: From a Farm Perspective and National Perspective
  • Horse Day: Steve McConnell, Farrier will delve into Hoof Mapping: If You Know What is Correct, You Will Be Able to Recognize What is Wrong
  • Crops Day: Odette Ménard, ing. et agr., Soil Health Consultant with Action Semis Direct, will dig into Maintain, Improve and Maximize Soil Health Through Affordable and Efficient Practices and Mark Robinson, Storm Chaser from The Weather Network will talk Changes in the Weather: Farming in a new Climatology
  • Ecological Day: Odette Ménard, ing. et agr., Soil Health Consultant with Action Semis Direct, will be back with Maintain, Improve and Maximize Soil Health Through Affordable and Efficient Practices

Many more excellent speakers fill out the schedules for each day, as well as panel discussions covering (by order of the day they appear) Setting up Calves for Success, Longevity in Our Herds, Virtual Farm Tour, Finishing Lambs for the Processor, Controlling Tough Weeds, and Pastured Pigs.

Livestreaming tickets must be pre-purchased online. It is recommended that attendees purchase in-person tickets online as well. For those unable to do so, cash, cheque and debit will be accepted at the door.

Registration price is as follows:

  • Individual Days, in person or livestreamed: $50/day Includes HST

-Livestreamers can purchase tickets for the whole week for $180.

Registration includes the thirty day Encore Access, and the many On-Demand bonus presentations. In person attendance includes hot roast beef dinner. Goat and Lamb are also served on those respective days.
