Lactalis to close Sudbury plant; exit plant-based bev. category

Lactalis Canada is closing down its plant in Sudbury, Ont., effective Dec. 12, 2025. It is also exiting the plant-based beverage category.

Established in 1962, the Sudbury facility was a fully operational milk processing plant for six decades. In 2022, it shut down. Lactalis Canada converted the site into a 33,150-sf plant-based facility and reopened it in 2024. The facility was meant to be Lactalis Canada’s first dedicated plant-based facility, producing the Enjoy brand of hi-protein, unsweetened plant-based beverages.

In a statement, the company said, “This decision follows a shift in market dynamics and the challenges associated with the broader economic climate, all of which have led to a sustained decline in the plant-based beverage category’s performance. Unfortunately, continuing operations is no longer financially viable and sustainable business for Lactalis Canada.”
