Vancouver food news: Fundraising with passion | Chinese restaurant awards go national

The Passions Gala raises money for the Dr. Peter Centre, which provides specialized support of people living with mental illness, addiction, food insecurity, homelessness and HIV/AIDS.

Fundraising with passion

The Passions 2025 Gala, the buzzy culinary fundraiser that’s also a celebration of community and compassion, returns for its 22nd year on Nov. 26, with a dazzling lineup of Vancouver restaurants, chefs and mixologists.

The main event is a culinary journey featuring an extraordinary roster of Vancouver restaurants, from The Acorn to Zoomak Korean Tavern, and 16 other beloved eateries serving delish small plates. Libations will be poured by top-class mixologists from, among others, the Michelin-recognized Good Thief and the much-lauded Keefer Bar.

Dig a little deeper and you can get in the doors early for the V.I.P. experience that features dishes from some of Canada’s most celebrated chefs and Michelin-starred kitchens. We’re talking no less than Gus Stieffenhofer-Brandson of Published on Main, Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co, Allen Ren of iDen & Quan Ju De Beijing Duck House, as well as Canada’s Top Chef Chanthy Yen of the much-anticipated Touk.

All proceeds support the life-changing care and programs of the Dr. Peter Centre, which provides specialized support of people living with mental illness, addiction, food insecurity, homelessness and HIV/AIDS.

Chinese Restaurant Awards go national

The Chinese Restaurant Awards has revealed the finalists of its inaugural national honours.

Fifty restaurants from across the country have been named national finalists, including no fewer than 29 from Richmond and Vancouver. See the complete list at

From this longlist of 50 restaurants, an “Elite 30” will be announced at a ceremony at the Vancouver Club on Oct. 29.

Founded in Vancouver in 2008, the Chinese Restaurant Awards began as a “Signature Dish” dining guide. But now, in its 16th year, it has expanded to rank Chinese restaurants not just in B.C., but across Canada and in Asia as well. A longlist of the Asian finalists was released earlier.

“Our mission has never changed. We still aim to uncover the finest signature dishes and to highlight the talent behind them,” says Rae Kung, managing director of the awards.
