NSF introduces certifications for egg products

NSF launches a free-run and free-range certification for eggs and egg products.

The independent verification reviews multi-ingredient food products and menu items made with compliant eggs. With the certification, hotels and restaurants can clearly indicate verified options on menus.

Eligible product categories include shell eggs produced by chicken, duck and quail. The certification process includes technical documentation review and site audits.

“NSF is proud to be the first to offer certification to free-run label claims in Canada,” said Carey Allen, director of food claims at NSF. “This new certification sets rigorous requirements for both free-run and free-range claims.”

The free-run certification ensures birds are not kept in battery cages and have freedom of movement. It is also available in a cage-free variation. The free-range certification incorporates the same requirements along with outdoor access for birds with a minimum of six hours daily, weather permitting.
