University of Guelph names new dean of Ontario Veterinary College
The University of Guelph has appointed Dr. Julia Montgomery as dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) for a five-year term beginning June 15, 2026.
Why it matters: Montgomery brings more than two decades of experience as an academic leader, researcher and veterinarian.
“I am deeply humbled and genuinely excited to be joining the Ontario Veterinary College as its next dean,” Montgomery said. “Being entrusted with the leadership of Canada’s premier veterinary institution by the OVC community and the University of Guelph is a great honour.”

Montgomery most recently served as professor and department head of veterinary clinical services at Oklahoma State University, following a postdoctoral fellowship in pulmonary pathobiology. Before that, she spent more than a decade on faculty at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.
Her research focuses on clinically applied questions in equine medicine, including asthma, metabolic syndrome, laminitis and rehabilitation. Her work also explores innovative technologies to advance both animal and human health, aligning with the University of Guelph’s One Health Institute, an interdisciplinary centre focused on the interconnected health of people, animals and the environment.
Montgomery received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, and a PhD from the University of Prince Edward Island. She also completed a Large Animal Internal Medicine (LAIM) residency and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of LAIM.
