As Vietnam is
shipping its first two batches of fresh lychees to Australia, the latter is viewed as a promising export market for these fruits, says the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia. Over the next few days, the two batches will become available across many Australian states. Local exporters say these are just the first batches to be exported early in the lychee harvest of 2020. Over time, the volume of Vietnamese lychee exported to Australia will increase sharply.
Previously, in order to help introduce Vietnamese lychees into Australia, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia held various promotional activities, including large-scale events. According to the head of the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia Nguyen Phu Hoa, Australian importers and owners of supermarkets and grocery stores have said they believe Vietnamese lychees will gain much favour among Australian consumers this year and sell quickly thanks to their inherent high quality.
However, he also said that unlike most countries, there is competition amongst lychee sellers in Australia as local farmers grow the fruit and Chinese imports are also sold. He advised Vietnamese exporters to work harder to win more market share.
According to en.nhandan.org.vn¸ Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to Australia increased 34.33% year-on-year, to nearly US$ 25 million, in the first four months of 2021.
