Bayer: U.S. Supreme Court could decide in June whether it will hear glyphosate case

Frankfurt | Reuters — Bayer said on Tuesday that the U.S. Supreme Court could decide as early as next month whether it will hear the company’s request to sharply limit costly litigation over disputed claims that its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer.

“There are two windows that we could hear (from the court). One is in June, … or it could happen in October or slightly later,” CEO Bill Anderson said in an analyst call after the release of first-quarter results.

“We think the filing went in early enough so that it could happen in the early window. It’s hard to say,” he added.

Earlier this year, Bayer reportedly told U.S. lawmakers it could stop selling glyphosate-based Roundup unless they strengthen protections against product liability litigation.

Bayer has spent about $10 billion (C$14 billion) to settle disputed claims that Roundup causes cancer.

Roundup is a key crop protection product for North American farmers.
