A huge surge in popularity for British-made cakes has lead UK-based online grocery store, British Corner Shop, to open a new distribution warehouse in Europe to meet demand.
Google search data has revealed that year on year, searches for “Mr Kipling” rose a huge 400% in France, with Germany close behind, seeing a 387% increase. Other countries across Europe also had notable increases, with Italy up 243% and Spain 100% respectively.
Given that cake is often seen as a symbol of celebration, and celebrations are an opportunity to come together with family and friends, it is perhaps unsurprising that Brits who have been unable to travel home in recent times have been searching for a slice of home in the form of a nostalgic treat.
With demand ever-increasing, British Corner Shop has opened its new distribution centre to support its loyal customers when they need it the most. The new unit, which is based in the Netherlands, will now serve customers across the European Union, and is leading the way in combatting the challenges brought on by Brexit import laws to the food and beverage industry. The new facility means British cake-lovers will once again be able to get their fix in just a matter of days, free from long delivery periods and custom charges.
With 2,000 popular British products available initially in European Union countries, cake fans will be pleased to hear that the new European offering includes many of the UK’s most famous confectionery lines, including McVities Jamaica Ginger, Jaffa Cakes and Betty Crocker Chocolate Cake.
Jon Farrar, head of marketing at British Corner Shop said, “We have seen a huge increase in customers shopping for nostalgic products that remind them of home and the expansion of our warehouse space into Europe means we’re able to serve those customers quicker and more efficiently.
“The opening of our new warehouse means that we’re able to increase the product range available to our European customers whilst also significantly reducing our delivery timescales to European Union countries.
“We’re thrilled to be able to once again serve our customers, and in return for their loyalty we have ensured that all European Union orders will be free of any additional customs fees or duties.
“We hope that being able to have a treat that reminds our customers of home will make what’s been a really difficult time just a little more bearable!”
