Canada – India discusses Early Progress Trade Agreement

OTTAWA, Canada – Mary Ng, minister of international trade, export promotion, small business and economic development, spoke with Piyush Goyal, India’s minister of commerce and industry, consumer affairs and food and public distribution and textiles.

Minister Ng and minister Goyal noted progress in the second round of negotiations on a Canada-India Early Progress Trade Agreement, while the two countries continue to work toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. They discussed the status of negotiations on key issues, including trade in goods and services, and investment protection.

Minister Ng and minister Goyal reaffirmed their commitment to maintain momentum into the next round of negotiations, to take place in the coming months. The ministers underscored the importance of working together to advance World Trade Organization priorities at the upcoming MC12 meeting in Geneva next week.

Canada recognises that as Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine threatens the rules-based international order, it is more important than ever for democracies to strengthen their ties with each other. Inclusive growth and human rights lie at the core of Canada’s trade policies and engagements.
