Charges laid after cattle theft

REGINA — Saskatchewan RCMP have laid two charges against a 62-year-old man after six cattle went missing earlier this month.

Scott Cunningham from the Rural Municipality of Francis was charged with fraudulently take/hold/keep/purchase/sell cattle found astray, and theft of cattle worth more than $5,000. Both are Criminal Code charges.

Fillmore RCMP, Livestock Services of Saskatchewan and the RCMP’s livestock investigator were involved in the investigation after the cattle were reported missed Sept. 4 near Sedley, Sask.

The animals were found at a nearby rural property.

According to a news release, the owner was searching for his livestock, which led to a neighbour calling LSS.

LSS operations manager Garth Woods said the current average value of an animal is more than $3,000, which makes any loss significant.

“This recent file provides a good example of how knowledge, relationships and timely actions can serve the industry well,” he said.

Cunningham is to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on Nov. 20.
