The harvest season of fresh garlic has already begun. The harvest is abundant this year. Production volume and product quality are close to ideal. Jining Xingyuan Fruit and Vegetables Co., Ltd. recently carried out a one-week survey in major garlic production areas to gather data on the harvest conditions.
Manager Zhang, director of sales at Xingyuan Fruit and Vegetables, introduced the planting conditions in three major garlic production areas. “The overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation in Jinxiang declined by around 9% in comparison with last year. This region is praised as the ‘hometown of garlic in China’.
The overall surface that was harvested was around 126,667 hectares. The harvest volume per hectare remained similar to last year. The second-largest garlic production area in China covers Qi county and Zhongmu county in Henan. The overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation there is more than 100,000 hectares. Zhongmu has not seen major changes in surface area in the last two years, and the production volume per hectare is on the same level as last year. Pizhou in Jiangsu is another major garlic production area. The overall surface area devoted to garlic production in Pizhou was around 44,667 hectares last year, but expanded by around 10% to 49,333 hectares this year. The production volume per hectare did not change much compared to last year.”
“As for product quality, the size of garlic is rather big this year and the product quality is great. About 20% of the garlic falls in the range of 4.5-5.0cm, another 30% is around 5.5cm, and the remaining 50% is around 6.0cm,” explained manager Zhang.
Farmers are currently sun-drying the garlic. Regular delivery is expected to begin in June. When asked about market predictions for the next few weeks, manager Zhang replied: “The garlic price may remain high in June and July, but later than that the market becomes difficult to predict as there are many speculators in the Chinese garlic market who affect market trends.”
In addition to garlic, Jining Greenstream Fruits & Vegetables primarily exports ginger, lemons, and pomelo. The company has an annual export volume of around 2,000 shipping containers.
