Here’s the Scoop: Petco Now Offers Dog-Friendly Ice Cream

Petco, partnering with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and human-grade dog food brand Ollie, will offer canine-safe ice cream for hot dogs seeking a cool treat. The non-dairy peanut butter and banana recipe is now available at Van Leeuwen scoop shops across the country, as well as at most Petco locations and online at petco.com for BOPIS orders. Additionally, customers starting an Ollie subscription from June 3-13 will receive a free pint with their purchase.

Van Leeuwen and Ollie also are hosting ice cream truck events featuring complimentary tastings of the new canine-friendly ice cream as well as free scoops of Van Leeuwen favorites for their two-legged companions. The events will take place:

  • June 1 at Washington Square Park in NYC;
  • June 2 at Union Square in NYC;
  • June 8 at Abbot Kinney in Los Angeles; and
  • June 9 at Petco Park in San Diego (ice cream for dogs only).

“We’re excited to partner with Ollie to create an extra special treat for pups,” said Ben Van Leeuwen, Co-founder and CEO of Van Leeuwen in a statement. “It’s the perfect flavor combo — my dog Hachi and our office dogs taste-tested it and could not get enough of it.”

Petco has been creating partnerships with veterinarians and retailers including Lowe’s and Marriott as a differentiation strategy, and in August 2023 Petco expanded its partnership with DoorDash to make more than 10,000 products available for delivery nationwide.
