Kraft Heinz Coffee Free Recycling Program Now Accepting Compostable Coffee Pods and Coffee Bags from Maxwell House, Nabob, and Ethical Bean

Canadians Can Now Recycle Even More of Their Morning Brew Waste with TerraCycle

TORONTO (May 12, 2025) – Coffee lovers in Canada now have an even easier way to enjoy their favorite brew sustainably. In partnership with TerraCycle, a global leader of innovative sustainability solutions, compostable coffee pods and coffee bags from Maxwell House, Nabob, and Ethical Bean are now recycled through the Kraft Heinz Coffee Free Recycling Program.

Canadians drink more coffee than almost any other nation, with more than 70 percent reaching for a cup of joe daily. With this widespread coffee consumption comes a significant amount of packaging waste that requires proper disposal. Flexible coffee bags are designed with multi-layered materials to preserve freshness, but this construction makes them incompatible with most curbside recycling programs, while compostable coffee pods require commercial composting and cannot be processed in home composting systems. Through the Kraft Heinz Coffee Free Recycling Program, participants can collect their used compostable coffee pods and empty flexible coffee bags, download a prepaid shipping label from the TerraCycle program page, and send them to TerraCycle. Once collected the coffee bags are recycled into pellets that can be used to make new products, like plastic storage bins, and the coffee pods are commercially composted—at no cost to the consumer.

“Coffee is an essential part of so many Canadians’ daily routines, but the waste it generates can be challenging to dispose of sustainably,” said Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “By expanding this program with Kraft Heinz, we’re providing a simple, free, and effective way to ensure compostable coffee pods are properly processed and the flexible coffee bags are collected and recycled instead of ending up in the landfill or incinerators.”

Kraft Heinz is working toward a future with less waste by improving the sustainability of its packaging and finding new ways to keep materials in use, as outlined in its environmental and social governance (ESG) goals. The company has committed to making all of its packaging reusable or compostable, and the Kraft Heinz Coffee Free Recycling Program supports this effort by offering a way to collect and process coffee bags that are not accepted in most curbside recycling programs, while ensuring compostable coffee pods are properly handled through commercial composting facilities. By providing consumers with a free and convenient way to recycle, Kraft Heinz is making it easier for consumers to take part in sustainable practices while working toward its broader environmental commitments.

The Kraft Heinz Coffee Free Recycling Program is open to individuals, schools, offices, and community organizations across Canada.  To learn more about how TerraCycle partners with businesses to recycle traditionally hard-to-recycle waste, visit www.terracycle.ca.
