Pioneering female founded Montanya produces possibly the most sustainable craft rum in the world in its B-Corp certified rum distillery in the Rocky Mountains.
Montanya’s long list of sustainability credentials include plastic neutral certification, the distillery is 100% wind powered, it offsets 110% of its carbon production and uses water from a snowmelt-fed aquifer directly underneath the Colorado distillery. Environmental obligations are considered at every step, from sourcing American grown sugarcane from a family run co-operative in Louisiana, to bottling in Cradle to Cradle certified glass and FSC graded labels. These strong values are unequivocally represented throughout their incredible range of American spirits.
The hero of the range, Montanya’s aromatic Valentia rum, champions the progress, passion and community of women in distilling. This dry rum, whose name means “courage” and “grit” in Spanish, is distilled by women and bottled by a female-led bottling crew, before ageing at altitude for four years in Laws Whiskey House barrels and finishing in a rye barrel from fellow female owned distillery, Catoctin Creek. Valentia holds an aromatic sweetness with a bouquet of vanilla, cardamom, ginger and honeysuckle, made all the sweeter knowing a portion of proceeds benefit the Women of the Vine & Spirits Foundation, who support education and personal development for women in the alcohol beverage industry.
With tasting notes including red chilli, coffee, caramel, vanilla, pineapple and chocolate, Montanya’s fantastic multi-award winning full-bodied Oro rum is aged for one year in a former White Oak whiskey barrel. The brand’s ruby Exclusiva rum works well in place of whiskey in cocktails, having aged for two and a half years in American White Oak barrels and finished for six months in a Cabernet Sauvignon and Port barrel. This gives the smooth rum an extremely complex flavour, where cinnamon meets red wine and honey meets vanilla.
Unlike many light rums, barrel aging gives Montanya’s Platino a unique smoothness and complex flavour. A touch of the brand’s signature Colorado honey is added before the rum is then filtered through a coconut husk carbon filter to retain the clear colour. The result is a craft rum with flavour profiles of cream soda, cardamom, coffee, vanilla and pepper, working well in on-trend Daiquiris and Piña Coladas.
From real, transparent, green certifications to an uncompromising, unparalleled, empowered female leader in Karen Hoskin, trailblazing for women in distilling, Montanya and their quality true American rum make for one of the world’s most exciting and forward-thinking spirits brands.
