Nespresso announced its global certification as a B Corporation yesterday, joining other well-known brands such as Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s and The Body Shop.
B Corp is a movement of over 4,500 businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental responsibility and transparency. The not-for-profit network aims to transform the global economy by working on five focus areas: Governance, Workers, Customers, Environment, and Community. A minimum of 80 points is required to achieve the certification, and Nespresso reached 84.
Nespresso has been a key player in the coffee industry since 1986, and recently marked its tenth year in New Zealand. The B Corp announcement reflects its commitment to sustainability, with its key contributing elements including the unique coffee sourcing approach in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, a partnership with Fairtrade and a global recycling scheme for its aluminium capsules.
“Every cup of Nespresso begins with care, for farmers and their communities, for the environment and for the future. Ultimately, when it comes to caring for others, doing is everything – and we are excited to have achieved B Corp certification to further demonstrate this.” Said Stefan Vermeulen, Nespresso New Zealand Country Manager.
Nespresso will be adding the B Corp logo to all of its products and communications to help spread awareness for the movement and hopes to encourage consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions.
