NSF unveils three-tier auditing programme to help UK hospitality and retail operators improve hygiene, manage risk and meet evolving regulations.

NSF has launched a tiered food auditing service in the UK aimed at helping hospitality, foodservice and retail businesses strengthen hygiene standards and meet tightening regulatory requirements.
The three-level programme combines expert-led audits, on-site coaching and analytics through the NSF Connect platform, supporting both independent sites and multi-location operators in improving compliance and operational consistency.
The launch comes as key foodborne pathogens including Campylobacter and Salmonella reach decade-high levels in the UK, and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) rolls out new risk-based regulations.
Michele Hardy-King, Director, Europe & Africa Retail, NSF, said:
British brands are under increasing pressure to deliver safe, consistent experiences at every location, even as teams change and regulations evolve. Our tiered programme meets operators where they are. Whether you need a practical first step or sophisticated analytics across hundreds of sites, we combine expert-led audits with actionable insights so teams can fix issues fast, raise standards and build lasting customer trust.”
Recent public health surveillance has reported the highest rise in Campylobacter and Salmonella cases in a decade, while local authorities have also reported deteriorating standards at some lower-risk premises and inspection backlogs, particularly for newly opened businesses.
Hardy-King added:
Operators tell us they need practical, scalable assurance, not one off checklists. In our new tiered programme, we ‘walk, talk and coach’ on site, then turn findings into actionable insights via reports and NSF Connect. Whether you run an independent café, a national chain, or are looking to expand your success beyond national to international, you get the same calibrated audits, faster feedback and clear priorities that move the needle on safety and brand trust.”
The auditing programme offers three levels to support businesses at different stages of growth.
NSF Food Safety Essentials focuses on core hygiene and food safety fundamentals through expert-led audits against NSF’s Food Safety Checklist. The service identifies critical risks, verifies documentation and maintenance standards, and provides real-time coaching using NSF’s “walk, talk and coach” approach. Actionable reports are issued within 48 hours of a successful audit.
NSF Food, Health and Safety Plus targets multi-site operators seeking benchmarking and oversight. Alongside the core food safety audit, businesses can add modules covering health and safety, fire safety, pest contractor review, allergen review and guest experience. The programme uses the NSF Connect cloud platform to deliver analytics, corrective action tracking and executive dashboards, and provides an indicative Food Hygiene Rating aligned with FSA brand standards
For larger or more complex estates, NSF Food, Health and Safety Advanced offers customised audit programmes aligned to brand standards and operational risk priorities. Quarterly insight audits assess food safety, cleanliness, maintenance and documentation, with options for targeted sampling, deeper analytics in NSF Connect and dedicated account management.
NSF said the tiered service aims to help UK food businesses manage regulatory complexity, maintain consistent standards across sites and strengthen consumer trust.
