UK-based Nush Foods has relaunched its dairy-free cream cheese – made from almond milk – in recyclable cups with snap-on lids, made by Greiner Packaging.
“Nush was born out of a desire to do dairy-free differently; to produce a range of ethical, dairy-free products and destroy the myth that dairy-free has to be bland and boring!,” says Met Foods supply chain administrator Andrea Wiltshire.
“We hand pick all our suppliers and only work with people that hold the same beliefs as us as a brand. Environmental sustainability is extremely important to us, and our almonds are grown in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine in the Val Di Noto region of Sicily. European almonds are kinder to the environment as they require very little water to grow, unlike the Californian variety that requires up to five litres to grow just one almond!
“Choosing the most sustainable packaging solution is part of our overall commitment and we chose to work with Greiner Packaging as they share our values and were able to offer an improved solution for our new look cheese spreads. The process of developing the new packaging was straightforward and we feel that Greiner Packaging is involving us in their sustainability journey as they are also making us aware of upcoming improvements, including a potential move to using recycled PP for our dairy-free cream cheese cups.”
Nushs thick and creamy dairy-free natural cheese and chive cheese spreads are made to an original recipe by churning bespoke, creamy almond milk freshly prepared in its UK-based artisan factory with live vegan cheese cultures and British sea salt to create a one of a kind dairy alternative. Nush makes its own almond milk so that the amount of almond it contains can be controlled. Unlike shop-bought almond milk that can contain as little as 1% almond, plus many unfavourable fillers, Nush’s milk contains a very high percentage of almonds and truly lives up to its name.
Nush launched its first products, the UKs first and only dairy-free almond milk yogurts in December 2016, adding products made from cashews in March 2017. In July 2018 the company introduced the UKs first ever dairy-free cheese spread. The new look – introduced this summer – is packed in Greiner Packaging’s fully recyclable K3 cardboard-plastic cup, with an in-mould label (IML) snap-on lid.
“We’ve supplied Nush with packaging for its dairy-free products for a few years, and it is great to be able to introduce a more sustainable solution to coincide with the rebranding,” says Greiner Packaging UK & Ireland sales and marketing manager, Julie Eller. “Our sustainable K3 packaging solution is a perfect fit for the brand. The lightweight cup and the snap-on lid are both made from the same PP material, and the cardboard outer layer can be easily removed to enable recycling.”
“The reverse of the removable cardboard wrap on the Nush dairy-free cream cheese cups is printable, so we are considering the best ways of using this benefit to tell more about our story to our loyal consumers,” concludes Andrea Wiltshire.
