“People are begging for raspberries”

At Frambozenkwekerij Devlieghere raspberry nursery, they are currently hard at work picking raspberries. “We started a bit later this year. Normally we start harvesting in mid-May, but this year we didn’t start until the end of May”, says Filip Devlieghere. “It is mainly the cold and dark weather that has delayed production slightly.”

“The demand for raspberries has increased enormously in the last week. The nice weather has played a role in this, but the opening of the restaurants has also had a positive influence on the demand. In addition, home sales are going like clockwork. We don’t have much competition. There are still some foreign raspberries available, but the domestic crop is not yet fully in production, so raspberries are in high demand. This has resulted in good prices,” says Filip.

“We are also very satisfied with the quality of the raspberries. The sizes are nice and big, the colour is light and the raspberries are easy to pick. They also taste delicious. All raspberries are of the Kwanza variety and the acreage has remained the same as last year. The season has started very positively and we hope that this positive trend will continue,” concludes Filip.
