Save A Lot Creates Test-and-Learn Colorado Supermarket Catering to Hispanic Shoppers

Save A Lot has partnered with Leevers Supermarkets to launch Ahorra Mucho, a new discount grocery store and innovation center in Aurora, Colo. that will feature unique Hispanic product assortments — part of the store’s mission of testing how new products and shoppers could strengthen shopper loyalty among this consumer set.

The Ahorra Mucho (which translates directly to “Save A Lot”) store will have specialized features such as a full-service, centrally located meat counter, a cornerstone of Hispanic cooking. The supermarket also will feature a broader assortment of fresh produce and an in-house bakery.

The store will operate as a test-and-learn facility, designed to generate insights to facilitate strategies for serving Hispanic customers. Like other Leevers locations, the store will be 100% employee-owned.

“Aurora, Colorado is the ideal launchpad for this offering as we have a vibrant and active Hispanic community in the area,” said Art Perez, District Manger at Leevers in a statement. “Leevers Supermarkets has long embraced the Hispanic community by tailoring signage and products. Ahorra Mucho is the next step in exploring how we can best meet our shoppers’ needs.”

Save A Lot has been busily expanding its service offerings this year. In February 2024 Save A Lot brought retail media capabilities to its network of 800 independently owned and operated stores. Earlier this month, the retailer launched its first-ever loyalty program; added a microfulfillment center at its Brooklyn, N.Y. warehouse to support faster on-demand fulfillment via Uber Eats; and deployed an automated traceability network to help ensure food safety.

“In tandem with Hispanic population growth, we’re seeing an increased demand for Hispanic food in neighborhoods all across the country,” said Bill Mayo, COO at Save A Lot in a statement. “The Leevers team’s expertise in this area makes them a natural fit to help us explore how Save A Lot can better serve Hispanic shoppers.”
