Shoppers Drug Mart expands healthcare access with new clinic in Amherst, N.S.

Shoppers Drug Mart has opened its latest pharmacy care clinic in Amherst, Nova Scotia.

Currently, the company has 74 clinics across the country, and by the end of 2024, it aims to add 72 more. The move also follows a recent announcement by Shoppers to open 44 pharmacy care clinics in Alberta by the end of this year.

“Results from our clinics to date have far exceeded expectations with over 300,000 total patient visits since launch, close to half of whom don’t have a family doctor. In provinces like Nova Scotia and Alberta, 20 – 35 per cent of visits were for chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” said Jeff Leger, pharmacist and president of Shoppers Drug Mart.

At a time when Canada is experiencing rapid population growth, Shoppers says the expansion is critical to providing essential primary health care services. They add it could ease the burden on the provincial health care system.
