SpartanNash acquires Shop-N-Save Food Centers

Grocery distributor/retailer SpartanNash has purchased Shop-N-Save Food Centers, a three-store supermarket chain in northwestern Michigan.

Financial terms of the agreement, announced late Tuesday, weren’t disclosed. SpartanNash said the transaction has closed and Shop-N-Save’s stores in Benzonia, Fremont and Ludington, Mich., have been converted to the Family Fare banner, part of the distributor’s retail grocery business segment.

Founded in 1973 by William “Bill” DeVries, Ludington-based Shop-N-Save was a food distribution customer of SpartanNash for almost 25 years.

A longtime SpartanNash wholesale customer, Shop-N-Save Food Centers operated stores in Benzonia, Fremont and Ludington, Mich.

“Shop-N-Save has been a successful family-owned and -operated business for decades, and we are honored that the DeVries family is entrusting SpartanNash to build upon their legacy and bring new offerings to its team members and grocery shoppers in Benzonia, Fremont and Ludington through our Family Fare banner,” SpartanNash President and CEO Tony Sarsam said in a statement.

The addition of the three Shop-N-Save supermarkets gives Family Fare, launched in 1962, a total of 86 stores throughout the Midwest. With the banner change, Shop-N-Save customers will be able to shop fresh produce, deli, bakery and floral departments, as well as a meat and seafood counter. The new Family Fare locations also will house pharmacies and offer SpartanNash’s Our Family brand products and Yes Rewards loyalty program, through which members get access to digital coupons, featured clubs and other perks to save on groceries and household products.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of our communities these nearly 50 years, and we are confident that with SpartanNash, guests of the new Family Fare stores will continue to enjoy the same high level of service, quality and variety they have become accustomed to at Shop-N-Save,” stated Bill DeVries, president of Shop-N-Save Food Centers.

Overall, SpartanNash now operates 148 grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin under the banners D&W Fresh Market, Dan’s Supermarket, Family Fare, Family Fresh Market, Forest Hills Foods, Martin’s Super Markets, No Frills Supermarkets, SunMart, Supermercado Nuestra Familia and VG’s Grocery.

“We welcome the Shop-N-Save team into the SpartanNash family, and we look forward to earning the loyalty of our new community members,” Sarsam added. “Our grocery stores are an important contributor to our business strategy, allowing us to provide a full portfolio of solutions for independent and chain customers that go beyond food distribution. We leverage the insights from our retail stores to continuously innovate our products and operations across our global network.”
