This year, spring frosts have destroyed about 80% of Hungary’s peach crop this year. Béla Mártonffy, who heads the orchard section from the National Agriculture Chamber, said Hungary is good for growing peaches, but only the right types, in the right places and with the proper farming technology. Orchard growers need to gradually change over to types of peaches that can stand up better to the challenge of global climate change, he told bbj.hu. Peaches are grown on a little more than 3,000 hectares in Hungary, a fraction of the 13,000 hectares on which the fruit was grown in the 1970s.
