“Sustainable ultrasonic clipper serves retailer demand for mono-materials”

Sustainable packaging and solutions made of monomaterials have been rapidly gaining in importance in Germany and neighboring countries in recent years. Affeldt Maschinenbau Ltd, a mechanical engineering company based in northern Germany, has also recognized this development, responding to the needs of the food retail trade. The latest addition to its machine portfolio is an AVN 929 U ultrasonic mesh machine.

General view of the machine

This innovation is a so-called “clipper” which, in contrast to already proven solutions, does not require a conventional metal clip. “The net and label are made of the same material here, so that the demand for mono-material can be met with the new packaging,” Sales Manager Torben Ellerbrock explains.

The nets and labels are processed either from PE (recyclable) or PLA material (compostable). Thus, a pollution free complete solution is made available to the trade. Says Ellerbrock: “The process is basically suitable for all products that can also be processed via conventional clippers, such as potatoes, onions, garlic, citrus fruits, etc. – in fact, anything that is reasonably round.”

Packaging sector in transition
The team at AFFELDT Maschinenbau believes the packaging sector is still undergoing major changes. Many customers, they say, are looking for sustainable packaging, and this is accompanied by a diversification of the packaging materials used.

As a machine manufacturer, we are challenged to react to the new requirements and to offer optional packaging options, be it the ultrasonic net machine mentioned here or vertical form, fill and seal machines with paper,” says Ellerbrock. “In the end, the willingness of retailers to invest in new packaging solutions, such as our ultrasonic netting machine, is there even during the pandemic.”
