Trump says Canada-U.S. trade deal achievable

A trade deal between Canada and the U.S. may be achievable, says President Donald Trump.

Trump addressed media with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday at the G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta.

“We’re going to accomplish a lot,” Trump said. “I think our primary focus will be trade and trade with Canada.”

Tariffs from the Trump administration have been a source of strain and anxiety for Canadian trade and agriculture since the president’s inauguration.

Trump said nothing is “holding up” a deal with Canada, just that he and Carney have different approaches to trade.

“I have a tariff concept, Mark has a different concept, which is something that some people like, but we’re going to see if we can get to the bottom of it today.”

When asked by a reporter if a deal may be achievable within days or weeks, Trump said, “It’s achievable. Both parties have to agree.”

The G7 summit will run through June 17. “Securing the partnerships of the future” is listed as one of the meeting’s three priorities.

Earlier on Monday, agriculture groups from the G7 countries put out a statement asking, among other things, for governments to work toward trade stability and rules-based order.
