BC Food & Beverage calls for swift resolution following U.S. tariff announcement

BC Food & Beverage (BCFB) is calling for a swift and collaborative resolution following the United States’ announcement of 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including several food and beverage products, such as blended syrups, dairy products, honey, baking mixes and doughs, beer, wine and spirits.

While the proposed tariffs are not scheduled to take effect until August 19, 2026, the announcement has created uncertainty for businesses that rely on the United States as a critical export market.

“British Columbia’s food and beverage manufacturers have spent years building trusted relationships with customers across North America,” said James Donaldson, CEO of BC Food & Beverage. “Our industry depends on stable, predictable trade. While there is still an opportunity for both governments to reach a resolution before these measures come into force, we recognize the uncertainty this creates for businesses that are already navigating a challenging economic environment.

“Our sector is one of British Columbia’s largest manufacturing industries, supporting thousands of jobs and communities throughout the province. Protecting reliable access to international markets is essential to maintaining that economic strength. We are hopeful that both governments will continue to work toward a negotiated solution that provides certainty for businesses on both sides of the border.”
