OTTAWA, Canada – Mary Ng, minister of international trade, export promotion, small business and economic development, met with Piyush Goyal, India’s minister of commerce and industry, consumer affairs and food and public distribution and textiles, on the margins of the G20 trade ministers’ meeting in Nusa Dua, Indonesia.

“Minister Ng is strengthening the long-standing Canada-India relationship, which is built upon a foundation of people-to-people ties. Since minister Ng’s successful visit to India in March, during which she and minister Goyal launched negotiations toward a Canada-India early progress trade agreement, minister Ng has met with minister Goyal 5 times to discuss the negotiations,” said media relations office, Global Affairs Canada.

The in-person meeting was an important milestone in the negotiations, as “the ministers discussed ways to move forward on key issues, and reaffirmed the two countries’ goal of maintaining momentum in the fourth round of negotiations, which is scheduled to take place at the end of September.”

Global Affairs Canada statement noted that Canada recognizes that as Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine threatens the rules-based international order, it is more important than ever for democracies to strengthen their ties with each other.

“Inclusive growth and human rights lie at the core of Canada’s trade policies and engagements,” concludes the statement.
