The first batch of organic Peruvian ginger of the 2021 season arrived in the German market on May 20. The Peruvian ginger campaign is starting with a significant increase in the production this year and great prospects in view of the good demand for this product.
“A few days ago, we sent the first shipment of organic ginger by air to our commercial partner Ben’s Ginger, in Munich, Germany,” says Kristel Camargo, manager of Elisur Organic, one of Peru’s main producers of organic ginger and turmeric. “This year, we have started the campaign earlier than usual, given the demand from our customers and the possibility of making a premature selection of the product. We are already preparing the maritime shipments that will go to all the markets in which we operate,” she says.
The German company Ben’s Ginger, a processor of organic ginger concentrates, has been working with its partner Elisur Organic for 3 years, maintaining a strong commercial bond thanks to their shared sustainable business philosophy. “This first batch of ginger was produced with a sustainable approach, aiming to guarantee environmental protection, social development and fair economic conditions,” says Kristel Camargo.
This year, the Peruvian company expects a 30% increase in the ginger production compared to the previous one. “Overall, Peru’s ginger production has increased this year; a result of last year’s good results, when the demand was extraordinarily high, as there was little competition from China, whose domestic market absorbed much of its own production. This has also led to new players venturing into this product’s cultivation, attracted by last year’s good prices,” says the Elisur manager.
Although the demand for ginger has stabilized compared to last season, when it skyrocketed due to the influence of the pandemic and the gap left by China, Kristel Camargo says that the product’s consumption is still good. “There are good prospects for this year, although it is still early to talk about prices, as market trends won’t be defined at least until July. With more vaccinations, consumers don’t have as big a need for immunization as last year, but the demand is still good,” he says.
Elisur Organic ships its organic ginger to the North American and European markets, with the highly demanding Germany and Italy as the main destinations in the EU. Elisur Organic is certified organic (USDA, EU, COR) and has the GLOBAL GAP and GRASP certifications, as well as sanitary authorization (SENASA). It is also working to obtain the BRC and FAIRTRADE certifications in order to ensure safe processes and a sustainable agriculture.
