Russia: Pyaterochka opens new distribution centre in Kursk region
X5 Group (“X5” or the “Company”), a leading Russian food retailer, announced the expansion of its logistics infrastructure in central Russia with the opening of a Pyaterochka distribution centre (DC) in the Kursk region. With a total floor area in excess of 40,600 sq m, the Kursk DC features 5 storage zones (fresh products, fruit and vegetables, frozen goods, alcoholic beverages, and a dry storage facility). Each zone has a specific temperature band that is best suited to keep relevant products fresh.

Pakistan: GrocerApp scores $5.2mln in Series-A funding
Pakistan’s online grocery delivery platform, GrocerApp, has successfully raised $5.2mln in a Series-A round from local and global institutional and angel investors. The round was led by Hayaat Global, with participation from Millville Opportunities Fund, New York, MENA-based Wamda Capital, Jabbar Internet Group and Nama Ventures, China-based Haitou Global, and Pakistan-based LeanBricks and Walled City Co. Further participation from angels included former Souq/Amazon MENA CFO Asif Keshodia, Khalid Alami, Ziyad Alami of Huda Group in Dubai, and Jon Puckhaber of Alvento Capital who participated in his personal capacity.

Spar Scotland trials fruit campaign with SGF Healthy Living Programme
Spar Scotland is launching a new campaign with The SGF Healthy Living Programme (HLP) where participating stores will give out free fruit to children to encourage them to eat more fruit and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. The trial will take place in 6 Spar Scotland stores in Kincorth, Mastrick, Northfield, Tarves, Peterhead and Keith in Aberdeenshire over 2 weeks from 14-25 June 2021. Participating Spar stores will have a selection of fresh fruit, including bananas, apples, and oranges, available at till points and children will be encouraged to take a piece by store staff.

Walmart Canada testing cashier-less store
Walmart is replacing cashiers at its Terrace store in northwest B.C., with self-serve checkouts this summer, making it a test project along with a select number of other outlets in Canada. In an emailed statement to The Terrace Standard, Walmart Canada said its Terrace store was selected as a test location because a large number of customers were using self-checkouts.

US: Global Food expanding to Baltimore Market
Global Food, a regional supermarket chain that sells a wide range of international foods, has signed a lease with Vienna, Virginia-based Atlantic Realty Cos. to open its first store in the Baltimore market, according to published reports. Owned by Sterling, Virginia-based Supermax Enterprises, the food retailer will open the location within 36,360 square feet of space at Meadows Shopping Center in Woodlawn, Maryland. The site formerly housed a Price Rite supermarket.

US: Grocery Outlet to open first New Jersey store in Hamilton
A chain of small discount grocery stores from California will soon be expanding into the Garden State. Grocery Outlet, which is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is planning to open its first New Jersey location this fall in suburban Mercer County. The store will be located in part of the former Kmart space in the Hamilton Plaza near the corner of White Horse Avenue and Kuser Road in Hamilton Township, according to Grocery Outlet Director of Real Estate Jack Reilly.
