JD Sweid Foods Announces Major Expansion

JD Sweid Foods, one of Canada’s largest food manufacturers, has announced plans to invest $20 million to ramp up production capacity at its Langley, BC facility.

The phased expansion allows the company to meet the rising demand for its fully cooked product lines and address evolving industry trends calling for greater food safety.

The company is to add fully cooked poultry capacity with an upgraded line that will include a new oven, fryer and associated equipment. Plans will see fully cooked and par-fry poultry capabilities available on both lines at the 9696–199A Street plant.

“Our expansion will boost overall capacity in Langley by 15%,” said David Pickrell, President of JD Sweid Foods. “The investment, one of the biggest in our 105-year history, will enable us to cope with future business growth and maintain our position in Canada as an industry leader.”

“Managing and maintaining high quality fully cooked products on-site provides greater peace of mind to operators and address the challenges and capabilities of the foodservice sector grappling with skilled labor shortages and rising food safety concerns.”

The expansion project is expected to be completed by 2024, with the installation of a new oven due next summer. New automation of its packaging equipment will also better position the company for future potential growth in the retail sector.

JD Sweid Foods has become one of Canada’s largest privately owned value-added protein providers. With manufacturing plants in Langley, BC and Waterloo, ON, it meets clients’ needs through a coast-to-coast network of distributors.

Its portfolio includes a full line of high-quality poultry, beef and pork products and services to customers in the retail, quick service and other hospitality and foodservice sectors.

JD Sweid Foods is a member of the Hallmark Farms group of companies, the largest chicken processor in Western Canada and one of the largest in Canada.
