The National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) announced that Peruvian producers will soon be able to export citrus and blueberries to India.
The Asian Government opened a public consultation, until August 31, on the phytosanitary import requirements of these fruits on the website of the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Once the consultation period has concluded, and if there are no technically supported comments to the contrary, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare of India will publish the phytosanitary requirements in the Gazette of India and Peruvian exporters will be able to export their mandarins, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and blueberries to this market.
“We remain committed to the agrarian development of the country; in this case, with the opening of new markets for national production, offering our farmers more market opportunities and alternatives,” said the National Head of Senasa, Miguel Quevedo.
According to official figures, Peru exported a total of 268,000 tons of citrus fruits during the 2020 campaign; 200,000 tons corresponded to mandarins, 19,000 tons to lemons, 29,000 tons to oranges, 18,000 tons to tangelos, and 2,000 tons to grapefruit. The main citrus exporting regions in the country are Ica, Junin, and Lima; Piura and Lambayeque also stood out with their lemon exports.
Peru has established itself as the leading exporter of blueberries worldwide and it exported 15,972 tons in the last season. The main exporting regions were La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Ica, Ancash, Piura, and -to a lesser extent- Moquegua and Loreto.
