Price of imported bananas higher than last month in China due to regional Covid outbreaks

The price index shows that in the period between May 13 and 19, the farm gate purchase price of local bananas in China and the price of imported bananas increased compared with last month, while the wholesale price in the sales markets and the farm gate purchase price of Emperor bananas fell.

Analysts from Xinhua News Agency pointed out that the Yunnan producing area is currently at the end of the season and the supply of good-quality grades is significantly lower, so prices are staying strong. The supply area has shifted to Hainan, and the quality has improved. The number of purchasing orders has increased slightly from the previous month, and the price of good-quality grades has been improving.

In the wholesale markets in the sales areas, as the temperature continues to rise, the variety and volume of seasonal fresh fruits have increased compared to the previous period. It is now off-season for banana consumption. The sales speed is slower and prices in the wholesale markets continue to decline.

In terms of imported bananas, large volumes have arrived at the ports. During this period, prices seen at two major ports are showing opposite trends. Due to repeated outbreaks in Liaoning, the shipping cost of Dalian Port has risen, and traders raised their quotations, which led to a slight increase in the price of imported bananas. On the other hand, the production areas of Emperor bananas are seeing reduced traffic and growers have lowered their expectations. As a result, farm gate prices have fallen slightly.
