Sustainability and environmental care are the basis for producing a good cantaloupe

“Over the years, our company has invested in the creation of high-tech greenhouses for high quality protected crops. Each of our products is certified ACCREDIA and undergoes strict controls, such as multi-residual analysis. The main purpose is to provide final consumers with very high standards,” said Vincenzo Cavaleri, production and sales manager of the Italian family-owned business of the same name based in Licata (AG), Sicily.

At Cavaleri’s the mastery of cultivating the land has been handed down for four generations and its aim is to make a modern, innovative and sustainable agriculture, without ever giving up traditions and typicality linked to the territory. In particular, the company, which covers an area of 60 hectares, is engaged in the cultivation and wholesale of its products to general markets.

The main products include new potatoes, courgettes, artichokes, tomatoes and melons. This latter reference is now being harvested, and Cavaleri also spoke on this in another exclusive interview for Freshplaza.

“Our variety of melon retato is SV9790MC of Seminis. It is a variety of cantaloupe that we grow without the use of grafted plants. The combination of our agronomic management, along with the robustness and health of the plant, allows us to obtain a product of very high taste and with a multiresidual profile very close to zero, a winning combination that is extremely rewarding,” said Vincenzo Cavaleri.

“This melon does not require particular treatments nor a highly specialized workforce, thanks to the marked peduncle marking that indicates the ripening, with no margin for error (see photo below). The SV9790 proved to be very resistant to temperature changes, an event that has been of great help to us in this 2021, a year characterized by a truly bizarre climate. This melon’s unique ability is also remarkable in adapting to tired soils, and always generates healthy and homogeneous fruits,” added the agronomist.
